Doctors from the orthopaedic department joined the Movember event as usual

Movember is a charity event that takes place every year during the month of November since 2003. Its aim is to raise funds and awareness for men's health. In particular, the event is focused on testicular cancer, prostate cancer and men's mental health.

Who is participating in the global event and who wants to support it is already visible from the edge of the month, when men grow the moustache that has become the symbol of Movember. This activity is sponsored by a charity called Movember, which, among other things, draws attention to the early detection of diseases, especially in young men, by regular self-examination. They are also advised, like older men, to have regular prostate checks. And since it is well known that movement is half the health, the Movember movement also encourages healthy movement and rewards it with funds for men's health.

Doctors from the orthopaedic department of the Hořovice Hospital have traditionally been involved in supporting Movember. Headed by the head of orthopaedics , Milan Pastucha, MD, a four-member team of doctors will try to accumulate 500 km by running or cycling during November.

"I see the whole event as an opportunity. An opportunity to support a good cause, an opportunity to move. Once I'm old, I might not be able to run as much. So why not take advantage of it and appreciate every km I can run and help in that way?" Milan Pastucha, MD, Chief of Orthopaedics, reflects.

"What do I want to draw attention to with my run? The possibility of prevention. Let's not underestimate it. Prevention is still free and available. All you have to do is make an appointment. It is not good to neglect anything, and on the contrary, it is often crucial to detect the disease at an early stage." adds Chief Pastucha.

Some patients think that the doctor and the hospital will help them and they are not responsible for anything. But this is a mistake. Everyone is responsible for their own health and everyone should take care of a proper lifestyle.

"I hate the moustache, I'm clean-shaven all year round, but it's the easiest way to reach people. That's why I'll have it in November." Says the chief in conclusion.

Along with him, his orthopaedic colleagues have also joined in supporting Movember. When asked why he chose cycling as part of the "Move for Movember" event, MUDr. Jan Beščec replies as follows.Today I don't have the energy for organised floorball training and I don't get together with my friends for football. I've been cycling for the last two years and really like the freedom with which I choose my routes. Plus, you can measure a lot of things on a bike - kilometres, average speed, and you can see a small improvement in that."

One shouldn't forget about exercise and at every age and stage of life, find an activity that is time and physical enough. Even a little will help and can make a big difference to health in general, both physical and mental.

MUDr. Bohumil Rosocha got involved in Movember as a medical student because he was interested in the idea of raising awareness of cancer prevention in men. "It seemed to me that at that time people were talking mainly about other diseases, for example, diseases of the cardiovascular system or breast cancer. Our faculty had a very popular event every year called the 'Movember run,' which was a run with mustaches in retro clothes. It was a beautiful combination of raising awareness of the need for preventive screenings and sport, which in many ways helps us to be healthier." explains orthopaedic department doctor MUDr. Rosocha.

Adam Stryko, M.D., is the fourth Hořovice fighter for educating the general public on this, for many, sensitive topic. "This is a clear demonstration that taking care of one's health through regular exercise, awareness and early examination is the most effective and inexpensive prevention." Through his activity, he is trying to encourage men to take care of themselves at any age and not go to the doctor only when there is a problem. Many times that can be too late.

Part of the global promotion is also a pithy video created for the Movember movement, as every year, by Tomáš Kalina, MD, another of the doctors of the Hořovice orthopaedics, with the aim of spreading the issue of men's health to the public. The video is conceived in the style of the series Narcos, for one reason - Pablo Escobar had a great moustache and it is almost to the day exactly 30 years since his death. There's no other inspiration in it, and his horrific actions are definitely condemned by the society.

Thanks to the TeamSpaceSharing app, we can track how the orthopedic team is doing in meeting their set movement goal. If anyone would like to support the Movember event directly, a financial contribution can be made through the app. This will not only support and encourage the team entered, but more importantly the entire charity event, where the proceeds will go.
