On Wednesday 23 September, Hospital Hořovice marked the seventieth anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone. The ceremonial event offered a look back at the hospital’s history, a presentation of its vision, awards for long-serving staff, and a varied programme of activities for the general public. Visitors had the opportunity to explore selected wards and try out some medical procedures for themselves.
The celebrations marking 70 years since the laying of the foundation stone at Hospital Hořovice were held in the spirit of thanking all those who had contributed to its development and highlighting its importance for the region. Among the invited guests were the Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, Mgr. et Mgr. Jan Skopeček, Ph.D., nor representatives of the Hořovice town council, led by Mayor Věra Veverková, who was accompanied by Deputy Mayors Eva Kaufmanová and Ing. Věra Eschnerová.
A look back at history and a glimpse into the future
During the morning’s ceremonial programme, the Director of Hospital Hořovice, Mgr. Jiří Pichlík, DiS, welcomed all those present. He thanked the staff for their dedication and professional handling of the emergency situation from the previous week, when the hospital received an anonymous tip-off about a possible bomb on the premises. He then recalled the hospital’s history and its gradual development, and also outlined its vision and direction for the future.
Awards for ten long-serving staff members
A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of awards to ten employees who are among the longest-serving staff members at Hospital Hořovice and who, through their many years of service, have contributed to its development.
General nurse Jana Srpová, who joined the hospital immediately after completing her school-leaving exams in 1966 and celebrated her 60th work anniversary this year, was among those honoured. She has remained loyal to the internal medicine department throughout her entire professional life.

“Seventy years is a significant milestone in the life of a hospital. As we look back on its history today, we must not forget all those who have shaped and developed it over the years and who have cared for our patients day in, day out. Special thanks go to our long-serving staff, who have dedicated decades of their professional lives to the hospital. Their work, experience and commitment to the hospital are immensely valuable to us and form an important part of its history,” said Director Mgr. Jiří Pichlík, DiS.
The awards were therefore not only a token of gratitude for their many years of service, but also a tribute to the people who, through their experience and daily dedication, have helped shape Hospital Hořovice into what it is today.
The hospital opened its doors to the public
From 10.00 am to 3.30 pm, an accompanying programme was organised for visitors on the hospital grounds. Individual departments offered practical demonstrations and gave visitors an insight into the day-to-day running of the hospital. A number of interactive and inspiring stations were also set up, where visitors could try out certain medical activities for themselves.
For example, the Pharmacy Hořovice demonstrated the production of ointments and medicines, whilst the nutrition department explained the nutritional values of food to visitors. Those interested could have their blood pressure and blood sugar levels checked. The paediatric department offered eye tests, and the transfusion unit gave a presentation on its work.
The Central Admissions Department explained how healthcare professionals identify conditions requiring the most rapid intervention and how decisions are made regarding the urgency of treatment. Dr Zavázalová from the ENT Department, for example, advised visitors on how to look after their hearing properly.
The surgical department organised practical demonstrations where those interested could try their hand at suturing wounds and learning about surgical instruments. The programme also included an HR stand advertising job vacancies, where those interested could find out about career opportunities at the hospital. A chill-out zone was set up for visitors to relax, and there was no shortage of other activities on offer.
Special thanks also go to the students of the Beroun Secondary School of Healthcare, who actively participated in the programme and helped organise the various stations and measure health parameters.
Seventy years of patient care
The anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the history of Hospital Hořovice, to thank those who have contributed to its development, and to showcase its current state and plans for the future. Hospital Hořovice is now part of the AKESO healthcare group, within which it continues to develop healthcare provision, modernise its facilities and improve the quality of services for patients.
