For the last three years, the U Sluneční brány Maternity Hospital has maintained its position as the largest maternity hospital in the entire Central Bohemia Region with more than 1,500 births per year and can compete with the largest Prague maternity hospitals. Not only mothers from the region, but also from Prague and other cities of the country come to Hořovice, attracted by the pleasant and modern facilities, professional and kind staff.

During the last year, the Hořovice maternity hospital has won several firsts, for example, it can be proud of obtaining the status of a perinatology centre or the birth of the first triplets. In more than half a century of operation, more than 35,000 babies have been born in Hořovice. "According to our data, the number of births has steadily increased over the years," says the head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department, MUDr. Aleš Klán. "Every year we welcome the thousandth baby a little earlier, which only proves that our maternity hospital is becoming more and more famous." Among the advantages of the Hořovice maternity hospital are not only modern facilities, superior room equipment, but also expanded capacity. "The staff of our maternity hospital is capable of delivering 10 -12 births per day with a maximum number of mothers. We do not announce so-called stop-stations. We only limit the number of deliveries due to operational or emergency reasons", adds the long-standing Hořovice chief.

According to the current statistical data of the maternity hospital U Sluneční brány, the number of births exceeded 1260 as of 21 October 2015. "I see the roots of the success of our maternity hospital, apart from the excellent erudition of the staff, in the pleasant and modern environment, but above all in the friendly behaviour of the staff towards the parents. The maternity hospital is an example for the whole hospital in this respect," says Michal Průša, MD, Director of the Hořovice Hospital, with a certain amount of pride.

And why is the maternity ward at Sluneční brána so popular among expectant mothers? "We provide not only medically high-quality, but also human care to all newborns and their families. At the same time, we strive to create a home-like atmosphere in the ward. We try to respect birth plans," says Milena Dokoupilová, M.D., head of the neonatology department.

Due to the trend of the society, the Hořovice obstetric unit allows for postpartum bonding of the newborn with the mother or father in the delivery room for physiological newborns. "By prior arrangement, we are open to outpatient births and also the hospitalization of fathers with mothers in the rooming-in system. If there is sufficient capacity, it is also possible for fathers to provide independent care for newborns of mothers after caesarean section," adds headmistress Dokoupilová. The Hořovice maternity hospital is able to take over the care of the mother-to-be from the 31st week of pregnancy, including all possible pathologies. For most newborns in Hořovice, a late umbilical cord ligation is routinely performed. Standard newborn screening examinations include, in addition to cataract and metabolic screening, ultrasound examination of the kidneys to look for congenital developmental defects, ultrasound examination of the hips and hearing screening by otoacoustic emissions. At the same time, on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month, the neonatal unit conducts discussions for expectant mothers, where they are informed about the course of care for the newborn from birth until discharge at the Hořovice maternity hospital.

The maternity ward at the Sun Gate regularly holds discussions for pregnant women on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, which are directed by midwives of the delivery rooms. "We are happy to participate in these talks, as our future clients are comprehensively informed about all the circumstances surrounding childbirth and are also given the opportunity to visit the delivery rooms and the six-week ward", says Mgr. Pavla Fíkarová, head nurse of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department.
