Long-term hospitalized children are not left behind

18. 1. 2023

The multidisciplinary team of intensive care for children at the Hořovice Hospital was expanded by Mgr. Jitka Svobodová, who works as a special educator. As part of the provision of comprehensive care for children with special needs, she provides them with access to education that they would otherwise miss out on.

For various reasons, these children require long-term hospitalization and intensive medical and nursing care that cannot be provided in the home environment. Thanks to the involvement of a special educator, children with many disabilities can develop their abilities. The special educator draws up an individual education plan for each child and supports his/her abilities and talents.

Children who require long-term support for some vital functions in addition to intensive nursing care are admitted to the ward. Most often this involves respiratory support using artificial lung ventilation. This does not prevent these children from playing, enjoying themselves, discovering the world and learning.

"Children with special needs also want to play, enjoy and learn."

The head nurse of the NICU, Mgr. "Originally, Ms. Svoboda came as a special educator involved in the education of one of our patients. With the support of the special schools, the hospital management and the whole team of the NIP department, we have managed to involve her in the care of other patients. She now works with all twelve children on the ward. This care is also appreciated by the families of the patients and most of all by the children themselves."

Currently, we are also starting a project to open a special classroom, which will fall under the OU, Primary School, Primary School and Kindergarten Příbram IV. Thanks to this cooperation, the number of teaching staff will be increased to meet the needs of the pediatric patients at Hořovice Hospital.
