As part of the awareness-raising event, people were able to test whether their hands were clean using a special device with the help of ultraviolet light from a special lamp and were also instructed how and when to wash their hands properly.
"I was very surprised that it takes 45 seconds to wash your hands properly. Most of the time you rinse your hands and think that's enough. I'm going to the doctor today, but when I get home I'll explain everything to my children and we'll start washing our hands properly today," commented Jana Krobová from Beroun, who came to the hospital today.
"Hand hygiene is important, it is important to remember that many infectious diseases are transmitted by unwashed hands. Thorough and correct hand washing is a simple yet most effective method to reduce the spread of diseases. However, it is important to wash your hands properly and whenever necessary," adds Mgr. Blanka Hošková, Quality Manager at Hořovice Hospital.
World Hand Hygiene Day, which falls every year on 5 May, is part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Save lives: clean your hands initiative. Now in its 11th year, it highlights the importance of handwashing as a key preventive measure against the transmission of many infectious diseases.
The theme of this year's 2019 campaign is: "Clean care for all - it's in your hands". The World Health Organization calls for achieving better health and well-being for all people of all ages by ensuring they have access to quality essential health care services and safe, effective, improved quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines. Furthermore, the initiators of the campaign urge health workers to practice good hand hygiene in health facilities, thereby reducing the risk of infection transmission among health workers and patients, and give everyone the opportunity to become active in the WHO campaign.
