Hořovice hospital building turns purple in support of premature babies

International Prematurity Day, which is celebrated worldwide on 17 November, has been a tradition in the Czech Republic since 2010. Its aim and mission is to raise awareness of premature births and related issues.

Approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely each year worldwide, accounting for about one in 10 of all babies. The traditional symbol of this important day is the colour purple, which is used to light up important buildings, churches or hospitals on this occasion. This is how people remember and share the stories of babies who were born weeks or even months earlier than they should have been. It's also a form of thanking medical professionals for their boundless care for premature babies. The medical teams in particular are held to a high standard in providing care for the little ones and their dedication and heartfelt approach to their work needs to be acknowledged. As in previous years, the Hořovice Hospital will proudly wear purple on this day.

The neonatal intensive care unit at the Hořovice hospital has been operating since 2011 and provides care for babies born from the 31st week of pregnancy. However, it also serves premature newborns who have poorer postpartum adaptation and require intensive care.

The ward is equipped with the latest technology and there are 10 intensive care beds in two bays. Each bed is equipped with an incubator or heated bed, a monitor to record vital signs, infusion pumps and many other important devices needed to care for these babies. "Two rooms for mothers are an integral part of the ward, which allows for rooming-in care once the baby's condition has stabilised. Visits to the intensive care unit are continuous, 24 hours a day, to allow parents maximum contact with their babies. It is very important that parents are involved in the care of their children as soon as possible and we in Hořovice try to make this as easy as possible." MUDr. Milena Dokoupilová, head of the neonatal ward, says.

Even though the entire neonatal ward and the neonatal intensive care unit are equipped with top medical equipment, the design is designed to resemble the environment of a home rather than a hospital. This is also part of the care, not only for the babies, but also for the parents, who often spend a lot of time in the ward. The entire staff of the Hořovice Maternity Hospital aims to make parents feel comfortable and happy, learn how to take care of their babies in the best possible way and go home together as soon as possible.

November is a month that highlights the issue of premature babies and everything that is related to it.
