The Central Sterilization Department is a specialized medical workplace that provides a comprehensive service in the preparation of sterile medical devices for operating theatres and all medical workplaces of the Hořovice Hospital. With its tasks and focus, it ranks among the components of hospital infection prevention and represents one of the basic aspects of comprehensive health care. The aim of the Central Sterilization Department is to ensure a high level and quality of sterilization of medical devices. Patient protection is the most important thing in our work.

The Central Sterilization Department as a specialized workplace performs complete pre-sterilization preparation and sterilization of medical devices.

The activities of the Central Sterilization Department include specialised hygienic procedures: decontamination, manual and machine washing, seeding and packaging of resterilizable medical devices, steam and plasma sterilization. The result is a sterile medical device.

As a specialised department, the Central Sterilisation Department offers the following services:

  • Disinfection, mechanical cleaning and special treatment of medical devices.
  • Disinfection, mechanical cleaning and special treatment of medical devices in automatic washing machines with adjustable and monitored parameters. Machine washing takes place in a closed system using thermochemical or thermal disinfection. Quality control of pre-sterilisation preparation is carried out by swabbing the medical devices after cleaning. The evaluation of the swabs is carried out by the Spadia laboratory based in Prague.
  • Assembling of surgical instrumentation into kits is performed by erudite nurses.
  • Packing of medical devices into special sterilization containers, disposable or reusable. The staff is professionally trained on their proper selection and use.
  • Moist heat (steam) sterilization, which is designed to sterilize metallic, porous, hollow and other thermostable medical devices. The sterilisation medium is saturated medical water vapour, which transfers thermal energy by condensation on the PPE. It is a wet sterilisation process. And plasma sterilization, which is for thermolabile materials. It is a 50°C sterilisation process. The sterilization medium is plasma created by hydrogen peroxide.
  • All sterilisation methods are carried out in modern equipment with monitored parameters, a written record of the sterilisation process and strict monitoring with chemical and biological indicators.
