Tradition or originality? What names do we choose for our children

9. 3. 2016

In 2015, a total of 1,599 babies were born in the Hořovice Maternity Hospital. The most popular name among boys is traditionally Kubíček, while the most popular among girls is Eliska.

For several years, the Hořovice hospital has been recording the first names of babies born in our maternity hospital in a given year, which is then used to create statistics and charts of the most popular names that parents give their newborns.

Although it might seem that today's modern times and trends set the style and originality even in the choice of names, this is not the case. Czech, traditional names such as Barbora, Jan, Matěj, Anna, Adam, Tereza, Kateřina, Barbora, Tomáš still lead the popularity charts. And so it is no surprise that in 2015, out of a total of 1,599 babies born, the most boys were named Kubíček. Jakub boys have regularly occupied the first place since 2007 (except for 2012, when they were beaten by Honziks), and among girls, Eliska has won.

Nevertheless, originality has reached us as well, and so among the little princesses we find Vanessa, Beata, Thea, Živu, Vivien, Xenia, Sonia, Dalinda, Aurelia, Greta, Elvira, Melissa, Apolena, Malvina and Estelle, while among the boys we find names like Damien, Sajmon, Yanis, Vendelín, Darek, Bart, Egon, Elyas, Jonatan, Emir and Kevin.

An interesting phenomenon is also the various "transformations" of names, when the base of the name is modified, shortened, "honed", an example of which is Rozálie, which appeared on the name tags of newborns in a total of 5 variants, as the aforementioned Rozálie, Rozárie, Róza, Rosarie and Rozalie.

It is also popular to add a second first name, and last year we met Bella Adaora, Emma Katherine, Maria Anna, Noemi Zenobia, Isabel Mia and Matthias Joseph, Francis Alvin, Kristian Sanjay, Stepan Alexeyevich and Václav Radegast, among others.

In conclusion, perhaps we can only wish the parents a happy choice of names for their offspring, and the children a positive experience with their names, which will be their reflection and will accompany them throughout their lives.
