The return of twenty happy colleagues from their holiday on the island of Kos

9. 10. 2014

At the end of September, two dozen satisfied employees of the hospitals in Hořovice and Beroun returned after spending a holiday on the Greek island of Kos together with their escorts. The medical staff, i.e. doctors, nurses or paramedics, stayed in Greece for a total of eleven days. Their selection was carried out in a completely democratic manner. They were the most deserving or the most popular health professionals. The cost of their stay was fully covered by the operating companies. And what were their impressions?

The island of Kos was chosen partly because of its symbolism - it is the place where the most famous doctor of all times, the ancient Hippocrates, was born and worked, but also because it is one of the most beautiful Greek resorts. While the Beroun employees stayed at the Pyli Bay hotel complex, most of the medical staff from Horovice spent their holidays at the Archipelagos Hotel. Pyli, which translates into Czech as gate, is located in a quiet and pleasant environment of Mediterranean vegetation in the outskirts of the resort of Marmari with a beautiful sandy beach.
"Our beach was pebbly, the sea was beautifully blue and transparent," Tomáš Veverka, the head pharmacist of the pharmacy in Horovice, describes his impressions and informs us about the common activities of our colleagues during their holiday. In the evenings, we met for joint programmes and competitions. The collective of the Hořovice Hospital won the competition I recognize songs from the 60s to the 90s. Some of us couldn't resist and went on a trip to the volcano on the nearby volcanic island of Nisyros, or to Turkey, from where we were happy to return to our European continent from the stormy sea," says Tomáš Veverka.

The health professionals from Beroun and Hořovice were also able to visit the first ancient hospital Asklepion and other ancient monuments in Kos, which is said to be one of the most beautiful Greek cities. They walked past ancient houses, a knight's castle and embraced the legendary Hippocrates' plane tree. "In a rented car, it was possible to drive around the entire island - the mountain village of Zia, the salt lake, the fortress at Antimachia and the more distant Kefalos, where we saw an unforgettable sunset," says Blanka Červenková, head nurse at the hospital in Horyovice. She adds that other colleagues visited the Therma hot thermal springs, where they warmed up their tired bodies. All the hospital employees unanimously praise the virtues of Greek cuisine. "I liked the food because of the large amount of vegetables, especially the delicious tomatoes with tzatziki," says Tomáš Veverka, summarising his impressions of Greek gastronomy.
According to the owner of the hospitals Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis, this event will be repeated again. Over the next few weeks, the staff of both hospitals will select 20 more employees who will take a holiday in the summer season of next year, probably on Kos or probably in some other Greek destination
