"In the region around Hořovice there is very limited possibility of diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Until now, we have had to send patients to other centres. Since the end of June, we have been able to take care of them right here, which increases the availability and comfort of this service for our patients," explains the reasons for the new investment Michal Průša, MD, MBA, Director of the Hořovice Hospital.
Osteoporosis is, however, often a serious complicating disease in patients who are primarily treated for other diseases in various departments and outpatient clinics of our hospital, such as orthopaedics, gynaecology, internal medicine or neurology. Densitometry is a minimally invasive examination that, unlike the previously used CT scan, places negligible X-ray burden on the patient. In recent years, pharmacological treatment of this disease has become available and effective.
The new bone thinning examination machine is located in the radiology department and will be operated by trained staff led by a certified doctor in osteology. She will also manage the treatment of patients with positive densitometric findings. Densitometry examinations are indicated by specialist doctors from various disciplines.
"The examination is completely painless and non-invasive and takes only a few minutes. The result is then processed by a specialist osteologist within a few days and the result of the examination is forwarded to the referring physician or the patient is taken into care herself. At the same time, we are opening an osteology clinic where patients with osteoporosis will be monitored and treated," adds the director from Horovice.
