Students of the Beroun Gymnasium have been donating blood for 20 years. They came for the fortieth time

On Friday, students of the Joachim Barrand Gymnasium Beroun went to the transfusion centre of the Hořovice Hospital for the fortieth anniversary blood donation. For reaching this milestone, the school was awarded the Jan Jánský golden plaque

"It is a wonderful and also important number not only for the donors, but also for the people to whom we give the blood," said Marie Štěpničková, a third-grade teacher who has been working at the Beroun Gymnasium for 25 years.

They come several times a year

Students have been donating blood regularly for two decades. The idea was the brainchild of Jitka Charvátová, a former teacher who originally started taking them to the blood transfusion station in Prague. "When she changed jobs, I took over," Štěpničková said.

Gymnasium students originally donated blood once a year, but later the visits to the blood centre increased to three per school year. The teacher herself is a great example for them because she has been donating blood for forty years.

"Donation, as they say, has been in my mind since I was a child. Back then, my beloved grandfather was operated on for a serious cancer problem and a lot of blood flowed through his body during the procedure - almost five litres. Because I loved him so much, I always felt like I wanted to give that blood back. When I was eighteen, I went to give blood for the first time in České Budějovice," says the teacher.

The class teacher greatly appreciates the students' willingness. "I would like to thank everyone very much for giving blood, even though they may be afraid. A big thank you also goes to the school administration, who are very helpful in this matter," she added.
