New teaching facility to boost training in coloproctology

3. 11. 2026

A teaching unit specialising in coloproctology has been established at Hospital Hořovice. A sub-department of coloproctology has been newly established at the Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education (IPVZ), with MUDr. Július Örhalmi, Ph.D., FASCRS, MBA appointed as its head. Hospital Hořovice, which is part of the AKESO holding company, is also one of seven accredited centres for coloproctology in the Czech Republic and has long been ranked amongst the most prominent centres in this field.

“Our aim is to create a modern educational centre that will bring together cutting-edge clinical care, practical teaching and international collaboration. We want to offer young physicians the opportunity to gain practical experience whilst bringing the latest trends in coloproctology to the Czech Republic,” says Július Örhalmi, manager of the sub-department of coloproctology at the Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education (IPVZ).

A focus on modern education

The new teaching centre will focus primarily on training physicians prior to their coloproctology specialisation exams. In collaboration with the IPVZ, there will also be practical hands-on training sessions, specialist podcasts, webcasts and other modern forms of teaching.

The primary target group consists of qualified surgeons, but opportunities will also be available to junior physicians and medical students wishing to develop their skills in the field.

Emphasis on practical experience and specialist placements

Specialist placements, practical courses, seminars and surgical assistance will play a key role. The aim is to offer participants not only theoretical knowledge but, above all, direct experience of clinical practice.

Training activities will take place both at Hospital Hořovice and at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, where technical modifications to the operating theatres required for teaching are currently being finalised.

An experienced team of lecturers and international collaboration

The team of lecturers will consist of MUDr. Július Örhalmi, Ph.D., FASCRS, MBA, and MUDr. Otakar Sotona, Ph.D. There are plans to further expand educational activities in the future, including the regular organisation of specialist courses and international conferences.

The centre also works closely with leading international professional societies, such as the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). Cooperation has also been established with professional societies in Switzerland, Slovakia, Poland and Austria.

The plans also include international exchange programmes organised in collaboration with professional societies and hospitals, which will facilitate the sharing of experience and the latest findings between different countries.
