Genomic testing for breast cancer allows for gentler treatment

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. However, thanks to modern methods of diagnosis and treatment, this disease can be successfully managed in about three-quarters of patients. MUDr. Martin Šmakal, head doctor of the oncology inpatient unit of the Hořovice Hospital, explained how the whole process from the first examinations to the choice of treatment takes place in the programme Diseases without Diseases on Czech Radio.

Early detection of the disease is crucial. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, doctors can use genomic testing, a modern method that helps to understand the nature of the tumour in detail. This allows the nature of the lesion to be mapped more accurately and allows the choice of a treatment that is effective but at the same time as least burdensome as possible.

A patient who underwent the treatment also shared her story in the studio. Her experience shows how modern medicine improves quality of life and reduces the burden of treatment.

Thanks to genomic testing, many women now receive "tailored" therapy and can avoid the side effects that are common with more aggressive treatments.
