Central Bohemia orthopaedic symposium in Mladá Boleslav

1. 5. 2019

Our doctors actively participated in the second year of the symposium, which was organized by the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department of the Regional Hospital Mladá Boleslav, a.s.

"The symposium was created in 2016 thanks to MUDr. Jiří Beznosek, the head of Benešov Hospital, where I worked in 2003-2008. During the planning at the meeting of the chiefs of the National Congress of CSOT, we agreed that we wanted a conference where we would discuss mainly complications that can occur during surgery. We did not want to create a symposium where we would all brag about our successes. On the contrary, we wanted to create something that everyone can learn from and we have succeeded," says Milan Pastucha, MD, head of the orthopaedic department at Hořovice Hospital and one of the five founders of the symposium. "There are 5 regional hospitals and 3 smaller ones in Central Bohemia, so I considered it an honour to be a co-founder," he adds.

The main theme of this year's event was Knee Salvage Surgery in Arthritic Terrain in Younger Patients and Complications of Joint Replacement. The symposium was held in Mladá Boleslav in the beautiful surroundings of the Na Karneli Educational Centre. The guarantor was Pavel Šedivý, MD, and approximately 150 participants from medical and non-medical disciplines attended.

The health care institutions that participated in the programme were the Regional Hospital Kladno, the Regional Hospital Kolín, the Regional Hospital Mladá Boleslav, the Regional Hospital Benešov, the Hospital Hořovice and the Hospital Mělník.

"Doctors from the Orthopaedic Department of our hospital presented a paper in each session, which was met with a positive response and we believe that we will continue presentations at conferences. We are considering organizing the next symposium at the Hořovice Hospital. Of course, we will keep the concept of admitting complications, humility towards medicine as an art and taking feedback from it, because complications happen during procedures and it is better to talk about them," adds the Hořovice chief surgeon.
