Blood donation has become a school tradition

The Transfusion Department of Hořovice Hospital is the largest collection centre in the Central Bohemia Region. It regularly supplies a number of Prague hospitals with the most precious fluid, blood. Over 5,000 honorary donors are registered in the Hořovice Transfusion Department's register and the number is growing. A big thank you also goes to the secondary schools that encourage their students to donate regularly and remind them of the importance of this activity.

One such school that regularly visits the Hořovice transfusion station is the Beroun Secondary Medical School, which donates blood with its students twice a year.

"This autumn, 31 students came to Hořovice and together with them came three teachers and even two mothers of the students," says head nurse Jana Šrámková, praising the large turnout.

The Beroun Secondary Medical School has a long tradition of blood donation and, according to the teachers, there is a perfectly understandable reason for this. Who else should spread this awareness among its students than the medical school. "Students from the practical nurse field, but also students directly from the medical lyceum come to the transfusion station. Blood donation is close to their field of education, so they enthusiastically support this activity. Thanks to their commitment and interest in the cause, they are able to bring their peers, who often have no way of knowing about the possibility of donating blood, to donate," says teacher Sitarová.

The ranks of donors are thus expanding to include younger grades, often thanks to students who are encouraged to do so by their school. Schools communicate their activities to the public via social networks, making it easy for young people to share this information.

The blood donations are mainly made by students in years 3 and 4, the condition for donation is that they must be 18 years of age, and just as employees are entitled to time off work on the day of donation, students also receive time off school in return for a reward from teachers.

On the same day that the Beroun Secondary Medical School arrived at the Hořovice Transfusion Station, Mr. Karel Vršecký from the nearby village of Tihava came for his 80th consecutive donation. He deserves great appreciation and thanks. When asked what led him to donate regularly and what continues to motivate him, he modestly adds that he just wants to help a little. "If there were more people like Mr. Vršecký, the blood banks would be full. None of us knows when we will need blood ourselves," concludes Mrs Šrámková on this successful day.

The Hořovice Transfusion Station would like to thank all its donors for their exemplary and dedicated cooperation and wish them a relaxing Advent season.
