This vaccine is intended for immunization of young infants from 2 months of age, but of course also older individuals, and it is a protection against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B strains. This type predominates in the Czech Republic and causes up to 75% of cases of the disease.
Meningococcal disease is one of the most serious diseases, with infants and adolescents particularly at risk. Transmission takes place by the droplet route, i.e. from person to person, typically in children's groups, where the source is usually a so-called carrier (a person who does not have difficulties themselves). The most characteristic course of the disease is meningitis or sepsis. Flu-like symptoms, such as fever and headache, are usually encountered early on, and the disease is therefore often recognised late. One in ten patients dies and, unfortunately, permanent damage such as hearing loss, brain damage and loss of limbs is no exception.
Vaccination is therefore definitely in order. It is an optional vaccination, one that is requested by the patient or, in the case of children, by the legal guardian, and is therefore not covered by health insurance. The price ranges from CZK 2 700 to CZK 2 900 per dose, with infants aged 2-5 months receiving three doses and one booster, children aged 6-24 months receiving two doses and one booster, and other age groups receiving only two doses.
