"Since we believe that the role of our hospital is not only to provide quality treatment, but also to carry out prevention and education, we have prepared this cultural and educational event, in which we try to combine the useful with the pleasant," said MUDr. Jana Ziková, a doctor at the Hořovice Internal Medicine Hospital, who welcomed the guests and colleagues present.
The lectures of the doctors were focused on the possibilities of prevention and treatment of breast cancer. For example, the lecture by Markéta Veverková, MD, head of the internal medicine department, had "sad content", because it concerned cases of cancer patients they encounter in the department. The Hořovice chief also emphasized the importance of prevention for the detection and early treatment of this disease.
The head of the oncology hospital , MUDr. Martin Šmakal, stressed that the statistics from Berounsko and Hořovice do not differ from the national average. "I want to tell my patients this: you are not alone in this, your families are with you. You are being cared for by a team of doctors and nurses, and we don't feel that we are each on a different side," said the chief physician, who is convinced that the fear of cancer can be eliminated together.
Olga Růžičková took the stage afterwards and introduced the attendees to the activities of the largest patient organisation Mamma HELP. This organisation provides all-round help to women with breast cancer and their loved ones. After the end of the official part of the programme, the delegates of Mamma HELP explained the correct procedure of breast self-examination, including a practice on a phantom breast model (see photo).
Visitors were not only accompanied by doctors from Hořovice, but there was also a cultural programme. Sisters Martha and Tena Eleftheriad sang in Labi. At the end of the event MUDr. Michal Průša, director of the hospital in Hořovice, thanked the guests for their participation and rewarded all the performers with roses.
