This traditional event is aimed primarily at attracting young people to the idea of donation. In addition to individual donors, several interest groups also participated in the event. Among them were, for example, about ten mayors and vice-mayors from the voluntary association Mikroregion Hořovicko, represented by a very sympathetic Ing."Today is the fourth time I have been here," says Mrs. Pat'avová, who notes that the main goal of their event is "to promote a good cause and involve more first-time donors." Among the donors for the micro-region was Mr. Antonín Merhaut, the mayor of Komárov, who donated blood today "for about the tenth time". Besides, he himself wants to be an example to his citizens, "especially the young ones."
Another interest group whose members took part in the Valentine's Day event were the smiling firefighters from Křešín (see photo). As we were informed by Mrs. Jarmila Lapáčková, spokesperson for the firefighters, 40 members are actively involved in their association, almost half of the residents of Křešín. "Almost all of them are blood donors. Depending on their age, some of them have had ten donations, while the older ones are around forty. Until recently, we used to go individually, but this is our second group event," explains Ms Lapáčková.
The Valentine's Day event was introduced by long-time head nurse of the transfusion unit and deputy mayor of Hořovice Jana Šrámková, who thanked all the donors present on behalf of the management of the Hořovice hospital. The transfusion station organizes interesting events for donors throughout the year, such as St. Nicholas Day or concerts with well-known performers. For its donors, the Hořovice Hospital also implements a free preventive health programme, which is tailored to the age of blood donors. This is also one of the reasons why the Hořovice transfusion station remains the most popular transfusion station for donors in the Central Bohemia Region. During the last year, Hořovice registered a total of 10,661 blood donations, while the number of first-time donors was 336. Among them were, for example, students of the Secondary Medical School or students of the Beroun Gymnasium J. Barrand.
At present, the transfusion department has an appointment system where the donor chooses the date for blood donation in a way that suits him/her health, work and private life. Donors can also make an appointment by calling 311 559 402 between 10.00 and 14.00 or by emailing darci@nemocnice-horovice.cz.
