World Preeclampsia Day: early prevention is essential

22. 5. 2025

Thursday 22 May marks World Pre-eclampsia Day. The Hořovice Maternity Hospital joins health care facilities and organizations that draw attention to this serious disease that threatens pregnant women and their unborn child. Prevention is therefore very important, starting with early detection of the risk of pre-eclampsia.

Pre-eclampsia is a medical complication in pregnancy, which is manifested by an increase in blood pressure and a high level of protein in the urine. It arises early in pregnancy, usually manifesting itself only in the second half of pregnancy. It affects 2 out of 100 pregnant women. One of the main manifestations of pre-eclampsia is reduced blood flow to the placenta and thus insufficient oxygen and nutrient supply to the fetus. All this can seriously damage the health of both the mother and her baby.

"As a preventive measure, we screen pregnant women in the first trimester of pregnancy. This includes determining the risk of pre-eclampsia," says Leoš Teslík, M.D., head of the gynaecology department at the Hořovice hospital . A. G.

First trimester screening is also performed in our hospital. First, blood is taken from the woman in the 11th week of pregnancy and between the 11th and 13th week the doctor performs an ultrasound examination. With this simple examination, the gynaecologist can detect, among other things, an increased risk of pre-eclampsia very early on and initiate effective treatment that protects both mother and child.

Pregnant women can make an appointmentfor a first trimester screening at the reception desk of the hospital in Hořovice by calling 311 555 000. For the correct appointment, they report the date of the first ultrasound and the corresponding CRL (fetal length) from the request form issued by the attending gynaecologist. Blood draws are performed by the Hořovice Hospital, AKESO POLIKLINIKA in Prague and the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. Ultrasound examinations take place only in the Hořovice hospital.
