World Blood Donor Day: the Hořovice Hospital organized a concert with Tomáš Klus in their honour

13. 6. 2014

Hundreds of blood donors filled the Community House in Hořovice on Thursday 12 June, where a concert in their honour was held. The musical guest of the evening was the well-known singer Tomáš Klus. The event was initiated by the Hořovice Hospital on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, which is traditionally celebrated on 14 June.

It is the first concert organized by the Hořovice Hospital for blood donors and their relatives. The aim of the event was to popularize blood donation and to attract new donors, especially young people from Hořovice and Berounsko.

The invited guests were greeted by Luděk Pelikán, MD, Director of Hořovice Hospital, who publicly thanked them for donating blood to help those who are in danger of their lives. According to the director of the Hořovice hospital, the number of blood donors at least in the local hospital is increasing. Last year alone, more than 11 000 donors passed through the gates of the Hořovice blood transfusion station, the largest of its kind in the entire Central Bohemia Region. A number of professional and interest associations have played a major role in this success. Undoubtedly, these include the Hořovice Mothers, members of the Police of the Czech Republic from Berounsko, students of Beroun secondary schools, volunteer fire brigades and a number of sports clubs, e.g. rugby players, Beroun Bears, etc. Luděk Pelikán also thanked the head of the transfusion station, Irena Klánová, MD, and her team headed by head nurse Jana Šrámková.

Ms Šrámková stated in her speech that 487 donors came to donate blood for the first time in 2013. "I most appreciate those who positively promote donation further and bring new donors from their family or from their friends, colleagues or neighbours to Hořovice," said head nurse Šrámková. "The most touching sight is when all the donation chairs are filled with family and other family members are still waiting to be donated. Nowadays it's not just mom, dad and kids, but also grandpa, daughter and granddaughter, for example. Some donors bring in a family member before it is time to stop donating because of old age, because they see blood donation as a civic duty," she stressed.

The rest of the evening belonged to Tomáš Klus, who with his musicians managed to enthuse everyone present and create an unforgettable atmosphere.
