Could you briefly introduce yourself to our pediatric patients and their parents?
In 2011 I finished my studies at the Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Hradec Kralove. The situation regarding the shortage of general practitioners for children and adolescents was already serious then. The existing general practitioners for children and adolescents had started to reach retirement age and young graduate doctors were not interested in the field because of the very difficult and thorny path to obtaining certification. The Ministry of Health responded to this situation by announcing so-called residency programs that financially and organizationally help young doctors to become paediatric practitioners. However, only around 20 such state-supported places are offered annually for the whole Czech Republic. After graduating from medical school, I managed to succeed in the selection procedure and obtain a residency position as a paediatric general practitioner. My supervisor was an experienced district physician, MUDr. Jarmila Seifertová, whom some mothers may know from the TV show Home Alone, where she has repeatedly appeared in the past. MUDr. Seifert was my "guide and advisor" during my postgraduate studies, which of course included hospital practice. For three years I worked as a secondary physician at the children's ward in Kolín and then I spent a year at MUDr. Seifert's centre in Kladno as a district paediatrician. On the last September of this year I finished my training and took up a vacancy in Hořovice.
How did you find out about the hospital in Hořovice and what are your first impressions from your short time there?
I was already aware of the hospital in Hořovice during my time in Kolín. Hořovice Hospital is famous among paediatricians for its separate paediatric ward and neonatal ward. I consider this a rarity among regional hospitals and in my opinion it has a great practical benefit. The care of newborns is very specific and very different from the usual work in the paediatric ward.
And what are my first impressions of the hospital in Hořovice? I am very enthusiastic. I really like the interior of the paediatric ward, which is completely adapted to the needs of a paediatric patient. I like the human and professional approach of my colleagues and the perfect cooperation between the children's ward and my GP's office. In addition, the hospital is situated outside the centre in a beautiful landscape with a view of the green area, which I personally also consider a benefit.
Did anyone influence you to choose medicine and paediatrics in particular?
I grew up in the hills of Pec pod Sněžkou. My parents run a mountain lodge. There are many advantages and disadvantages to living in the countryside. Imagine living thousands of metres above sea level, it's minus 5 degrees outside, there are snow drifts everywhere and a strong north wind has been blowing for two days. You've got a sick child who's had a high fever for three days... I remember moments like that from my childhood. I was the sick kid, and my district doctor came to see me on a snowmobile. I looked up to her with great admiration... My sister and I often played doctor in the mountains.
What plans are you coming to Hořovice with, how will your practice work and what will you offer to small patients?
I prefer an individual approach to the patient. I would like to get to know, get to know and remember my patients in a short time. I consider it a win when immediately after saying a patient's name, a picture of the patient, his/her health, family and social history comes to mind, without flipping through the medical records. I find it really unacceptable when a doctor doesn't know his patients. My goal is to make children and their parents feel comfortable in our office.
How do you spend your free time, what energizes you?
I am comfortable in beautiful scenery, it really recharges me. I really like to visit my parents in Pec pod Sněžkou, but I didn't choose Beroun by chance either. I enjoy sports and trips of all kinds. I used to ski a lot, and I could certainly replace skiing in this area with cycling or horse riding.
