"We have opened two new superior family postpartum rooms for them. From the time they leave the delivery room until they are discharged home, not only the parents but also the older sibling can stay here with the baby all the time," says MUDr. Milena Dokoupilová , head of the neonatology department at Hořovice Hospital.
The Hořovice Maternity Hospital has been allowing dads to be present not only during the entire birth, but also to stay with the mother and the newborn in the sixth-grade ward. The new comfortable family rooms have now been opened due to the interest of mothers who wished to have their whole family with them.
"We are thus supporting the formation of stronger family relationships from the very beginning," says the head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department, Leoš Teslík, M.D., I.F.E.P.A.G.
The new family rooms, which were created during the six-month conversion of three smaller rooms, are approximately 30 square metres in size and are located just a few steps away from the delivery rooms. Previously, parents in the superior postpartum rooms had only twin beds. Now there is a large double bed in each of the two family rooms, which is high to make it easier for mothers to get up from. It includes a kitchenette, a comfortable chair with a nursing pillow, a table and chairs, and a large screen television.
Even after a caesarean section
Both family rooms have their own spacious bathroom with a wheelchair accessible shower. "Women can stay here after spontaneous labour and after a caesarean section. For them we have a monitoring unit connected to the nurses' station," says head nurse Dokoupilová.
As in the other rooms, mothers in the family rooms have their newborns with them around the clock. Doctors and nurses from the neonatal unit visit them and patiently teach them how to care for the baby. And not only them, but also the fathers. "Dads learn how to take care of a newborn faster than if they only get to know it better after returning home," say the nurses from the Hořovice maternity hospital.
A stay in a family room costs CZK 3,500 per day. As the hospital in Hořovice continues to grow, it is only a matter of time before two more family rooms are added to the two family postpartum rooms. However, it is already certain that they cannot be booked by women in labour. "You can't plan a birth. A mother has a date on her pregnancy card, but no one knows exactly when she will give birth. If there is a vacancy, we will offer the room," said Milena Dokoupilová, the headmistress.
The Hořovice Maternity Hospital U Sluneční brány is the largest in the Central Bohemia Region. It offers modern and completely separate delivery rooms and above-standard services for both mothers and their relatives. For 10 years it has had the status of a Perinatology Centre of Intermediate Care with an intensive care unit for newborns, which takes care of most babies born here from the 30th week of pregnancy, without the need for transfer to a higher facility, which is a great benefit for parents.
