Bone marrow transplantation is the only treatment option for many patients with hematopoietic diseases. Each new donor on the registry increases the chances of finding a suitable donor for a particular patient.
Enrolment in the Bone Marrow Donor Registry is simple and voluntary. All an applicant has to do is have a blood sample taken and complete a short health questionnaire.
They can sign up for the registry by:
- Healthy persons aged 18-40 years, (up to their 41st birthday),
- weighing at least 50 kg,
- without serious chronic diseases,
- in excellent health,
- no permanent medication or treatment (exception: contraception),
- with public health insurance valid in the Czech Republic.
Registration at the Hořovice Hospital
The Transfusion Department of Hořovice Hospital has been cooperating with the Prague IKEM for more than 10 years. This year, thanks to the strong story of little Madlena, the number of newly registered donors exceeded fifty.
"We would like to thank all those who have joined the registry, and we would also like to invite other interested parties," says Pavlína Nováková, Head Nurse of the Transfusion Department at Hořovice Hospital.
"Registration for the Prague IKEM continues at the Transfusion Station of the Hořovice Hospital, without the need for prior appointment - on working days from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Groups with more than ten people can make an appointment in advance by calling 311 559 402 between 10.00 and 14.00, where we will also be happy to answer any questions about registration," he adds.
It is a free, quick and simple procedure, but one that can mean a chance at life for a particular patient.
