World Blood Donor Day

15. 6. 2022

Tuesday 14 June is World Blood Donor Day. The transfusion department of the Hořovice hospital has prepared a small treat for donors on this occasion. Everyone received a bottle of red wine and were offered sandwiches. Although the hospital has enough blood thanks to responsible donors, there is a shortage of blood nationwide.

"Our donors receive various other attention from the hospital and insurance companies. For example, we appreciate first-time donors, and then after the fifth donation, when they have come forty or eighty times in total. We even have some donors who have donated for the hundred and sixtieth time. There is always a more valuable material gift waiting for them and they also receive a third degree plaque from the Red Cross," said Jana Šrámková, head nurse of the Hořovice Hospital's transfusion department.

One of the blood donors present was Jana Sojková from Žebrák, who has been coming to the Hořovice transfusion department for the third year. She was inspired to take this step by her biker friends. "I am glad that I can help in this way. And if I ever need it, there will be blood," said the donor.

Petra Šebková from Lhotka, who has been donating blood for 21 years, came for the 40th time. "It's help that anyone can give and it doesn't cost them anything. If my health and age allow it, I will certainly be happy to reach another forty," she revealed.

According to the latest reports from the General Health Insurance Company, we are struggling with insufficient numbers of donors nationwide. Ideally, up to 40,000 more would be needed. As a result, some hospitals are reporting a shortage of blood supplies and are looking for new donors in various ways. In Hořovice, too, new donors are in demand, but fortunately they can rely on the responsible approach of existing donors, who can cover the blood needs of the local hospital.

"In case the consumption increases, we invite donors and they always come willingly. Generally if there is a need, we also help other hospitals or they in turn help us," said the head nurse, who thanks all donors for their judicious approach and wishes everyone robust health.

In Hořovice there is a demand for all blood groups.

At the same time, according to the current needs, they adjust the specific ones - these days it is mainly all negative groups, including A+ and 0+. "We operate on three variants of the so-called invitation. One is that we leave it up to the will of the donors. Then there is the form of inviting just as necessary, where we send text messages, and the third way is an emergency call for donation," Šrámková explained, adding that if someone decides to donate, it is best to initially inform themselves on the hospital's website, where they can find all the most important information.

At the moment, the hospital in Hořovice is registering more than five thousand donors and last year exactly 11499 donations were made. In total, people donated around 5.5 thousand litres of blood.
